Waseda University International Recruitment, Spring Semester 2010

Information about the Teaching Demonstration

  • As part of the recruitment process, we ask all candidates to give a fifteen-minute teaching demonstration, which will be observed by senior teaching staff. The purpose of this is to observe the way you interact with the students and manage the class, as well as to gain an impression of your teaching skills.

  • You will be given an activity to teach - it will be an exercise from one of our Reach Out textbooks. You will be given fifteen minutes to prepare. We ask you to start with a short introduction activity, as you would normally do when meeting new students. Then, set up and begin to teach the activity. The students in the teaching demonstration are volunteers.

  • The focus of each activity is to teach some vocabulary or expressions, and to give the students a chance to use the new language in meaningful communication. The course is focused on conversation - the main goal of every lesson is to give students the opportunity to speak as much as possible.

  • It's important that your introduction be short enough to give you time to get to the teaching activity. Obviously, you may not be able to complete it in fifteen minutes - that's fine. We will tell you when your time is up.
